What happens when middle school students take traffic safety into their own hands? In Maplewood, it leads to real change. Thanks to a team of innovative young minds from Maplewood Middle School’s STEAM Tank Team, a new one-way traffic plan designed to improve student safety is set to take effect on Monday, March 24th.
Key work includes insulating and labeling steam lines, balancing HVAC systems, troubleshooting temperature control issues, and addressing minor piping leaks, with the auditorium roof coating on hold due to weather.
MMS will participate in Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action February 3-7, 2025. This week inspires our theme for the entire month. Our theme for Black History Month is taken from this year’s Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action: “All Ages of Activism.” Look for more information on how we will recognize this theme through the month through learning experiences, music, art installations, social media highlights, and more!

Theodore Cummings, a student at Maplewood Middle School (MMS) and member of the STEAM Tank Team, shared a slide presentation of the MMS STEAM Tank Team project. The contest is a competition in which students identify a problem in their community and solve it by using elements of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Nic Mansfield and Leila Harrison also worked on the presentation. See photo above of all the STEAM Tank Team members.
For more than a decade, the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) has been at the heart of Arts in Education (AIE) programming across Essex County, positively affecting the lives of more than 8,000 students annually.
The South Orange and Maplewood School District (SOMSD) has been honored with three prestigious 2024 Publications and Digital Media Excellence Awards by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). These awards recognize some of the District’s achievements in writing, electronic newsletter publishing, and in-house video production.
Maplewood Middle School’s Swagga Jumpers are leaping home victorious from their first-ever state double dutch competition. The team faced a dozen other teams at the American Double Dutch League - New Jersey Division championships.
The significance of Dowling’s achievement is bigger than her connection with the previous record holder, said Gronau. The Columbia Girls Track Program has launched many runners into greatness including four-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs and her sister three-time Olympian Hazel Clark, to name just a couple.
